The schedule to the midterm on Monday 2 November 2026.

CS332 Design and Analysis of Algorithms · created 2026-10-10

1. Goal & constraints

  • Goal: pass the mid-semester exam (25% of the grade), on Monday 2 November 2026.
  • Expected question types: proving O/Ω/Θ with constants c and n₀, solving recurrences, loop-invariant and induction proofs, and tracing algorithms by hand.
  • Time budget: 5–7 hours per week, so about 2 hours per topic.
  • Prerequisites to rebuild along the way: logs and exponents, summations, recursion, proof writing.
  • Rules: zero cost. Notes are written in my own words, never copied, and cite "Slide N / CLRS Ch. X". Slides and the book are never committed (see .gitignore). For assignments I get guidance only, never full solutions.

Nov 2Midterm

The website was built early (10 Oct) so every topic already has a draft note. A topic only counts as done after a live session and a passed mastery check (see Progress).

4. How each session works: I pick the mode

At the start of every topic, and again whenever something isn't clicking, I'm asked which mode I want:

ModeWhat it looks like
VisualDiagrams, tables and step-by-step traces first, then the formula
Examples firstWork one concrete example, then generalise to the rule
SocraticI'm asked guiding questions with hints and work it out myself
Explain → drillA clear explanation, then a set of practice problems
  • I can switch modes at any point ("switch to visual").
  • If a mode isn't working, the next step is a different mode, not the same explanation again.
  • Every mode ends the same way: I explain it back, then a mastery check.

Definition of done (per topic): I solve a fresh problem with no hints and explain it in my own words.

What every notes/<topic>.md contains

  1. Everyday analogy
  2. Key formula / rule
  3. ## Visual: trace table or diagram
  4. ## Worked example
  5. ## Guided questions (answers hidden, which become collapsible on the website)
  6. ## Explanation & drill
  7. Common mistakes
  8. References (Slide N / CLRS section)

5. Weak-spot coverage

Weak spotTopics that train it
Recurrences / Big-O0, 5, 6, 8
How algorithms actually run1, 4, 7
Choosing a technique1, 7 + notes/which-technique.md
Proofs2, 3, 4, 6, 8

6. Files updated after each topic

  • notes/topics/<topic>.md: the topic note (all four modes)
  • notes/progress.md: status, mastery-check result, which mode(s) worked
  • notes/mistakes.md: every mistake I made and the fix
  • notes/cheatsheet.md: one-line formulas and rules
  • notes/which-technique.md: "if the problem looks like X, try Y"

7. Later phases

  • Phase 2: website deployed free with GitHub Pages + GitHub Actions. ✅ built 10 Oct with MkDocs; rebuilt the same day with React + shadcn/ui (Fumadocs), a custom palette and automated tests. See How this site works.
  • Phase 3: Anki-importable flashcard CSV, links to VisuAlgo visualisers, timed "exam mode" from notes + mistakes. ✅ built 10 Oct: flashcards/daa-flashcards.csv, See it move links on each topic page, Mock midterm A and B.
  • Phase 4 (optional): CONTRIBUTING.md for classmates, plus a check that no copyrighted material is in the repo. ✅ built 10 Oct: Contributing, and GitHub Actions refuses to publish if a PDF or slide file is ever committed.

8. Open items

  • Midterm date: 2 Nov 2026
  • Midterm format / allowed materials (fill in when announced)
  • Add new slide decks to the topic map as the course continues
